Fruit Art and Buying Local Food
I made this fruit bowl for one of my yoga classes last week. In my yoga classes I give handouts on different topics related to yoga and well being and last week it was healthy desserts. Melons are in season right now and they are so delicious! I used a melon baller to make the cute little circular shaped melons and I used a V melon cutter to make the v shapes around the melon. This was a lot of fun to make! Have you ever done fruit art before?
In other news I have been going to a lot of local markets to buy half of my produce for the week. I really enjoy going to local farmers, supporting them and talking to them. I would not have known about these local places to buy food had there not been a big article written in the local paper about it. There are actually about 5 markets that that are close by from which I can choose to go to during the week! That is great! On Friday afternoons from 4 - 8 pm there is a market in Lilburn across from the police station. I buy my watermelon, peaches are tomatoes here. On Saturday mornings there are two I can choose from that are close by. There is one in Snellville and one in Lawrenceville. This Saturday I went to the Snellville market. There was a woman I bought organic onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers from. She just started her farm this year to be able to feed her family healthy food. I find the prices are very affordable and I like knowing where my food is coming from. If you get a chance you should watch a movie called The Future of Food. If you have netflix you can watch it instantly or you can order it. The focus of the movie is on genetically modified food. I really like it because it explains exactly how genetically modified food is made (which is disturbing) and it gives us as consumers a lot of great information about genetically modified food and what it is doing to our agriculture. I highly recommend that you watch this movie if you are able to. It has caused me to want to buy my food locally and organic ever more than I did before.
Daily Questions: Have you played around with fruit art? What have you made? Do you ever go shopping locally?
Your dish looks delicious! ;) i'm desperatly searching for a way to buy my fruits and veggies locally and organic but i'm just not able to find something really close or else i have to drive more than an hour and i can't do that twice a week.. + i have watched something similiar about GMO's that made me 100% against it.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. Maybe you have a neighbor who is growing food or is there a CSA in your area that you could buy shares of food from? Good luck finding something!
ReplyDeleteI love that you just kept melon with melon....I only eat melon in isolation, never combine it w/ anything else.

Elizabeth,
ReplyDeleteThanks, they are both ripe in abundance right now and I have read that it best to eat melons alone and not mix them with other fruits. Thank you for the comment.
