I made these popsicles to enjoy over the weekend. It was my first time making multi-colored popsicles. They were yummy!
Lately I have been buying a lot of local and organic food. Normally I have focused on buying organic but now I am more interested in buying local from the farmer as well as organic. This weekend I went to a local market with lots of vendors. At the market I bought Georgia peaches ($5 for 3.5 lbs, tomatoes $2 for a large bag, acorn squash $3 for 2, and cucumber 3 for $1. I normally talk to the farmers and I was talking with the guy I but peaches from at Pearson Farm. He said they they do use some chemicals and pesticides on their farms but very minimally and only if very necessary. He had his fruit was tested at the University of Georgia and the peaches showed to be 99% free of pesticides. The difference between this and a big corporate peach grower is that the corporation automatically spray peaches with lots of chemicals rather than treating each tree individually. After talking with a lot of farmers I realized that the USDA organic standard is very expensive for small farmers to pay for. Georgia Certified Naturally Grown is a certification some farmers will get that have the same standards as USDA organic but are more affordable for a small farmer. As I was driving home from the market and pulled into my neighborhood, I noticed there was a sign on a neighbor's mailbox that said, "Fresh tomatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, and cucumbers FOR SALE". I pulled into the drive way and met the woman who grows the food. She said she only uses organic seeds (I am trying to avoid farmers who might use GMO seed) and grows organically. She was really nice. I bought an eggplant, 5 large tomatoes, and 3 cucumber for a total of $5. She is less than one mile away from where I live. I am excited to that I can but healthy produce so close to where I live! My fridge is stocked and I spent a fracture of what I normally pay at the stores. Anyways, just wanted to share that sometimes there is more local food than we realize right under our noses.
I have some exciting recipes coming up this week that I will be photographing and sharing with you guys! I will be making an eggplant ravioli (got the idea and basic recipe here), eggplant bacon, basil wraps, and squash crepes (I got all of these recipe ideas from www.rawmazing.com). I have decided to try and make new recipes each week so I don't get bored with the same ones. So stay tuned! Do you buy from local farmers?
