All Things Organic on A Budget!
This is my raw food blog so I have to quickly mention that this is my 15th day at 100% raw food! On to the topic at hand, all things organic! One of my new years resolutions this year is purchasing items (food, clothing, and everything) from either local people or organic businesses who are environmentally friendly. This is very important because money talks and we need to support businesses that are doing things the right way with our dollars! Now I am also a full time yoga instructor which means I am rich right? Wrong! I have to do organic on a budget! So I was super excited when I got an email from under the canopy that they were having a BIG blow out sale! Boy are they ever, I bought a full set of queen organic sheets (including fitted, cover sheet and pillow cases) for $30 and the price is normally $150. I also bought a bed cover with pillows for a great price. The picture is above. They have great clothes there so I got three different organic yoga tops for $10 that fit me great. I also got some organic short sleeve shirts and everyday shirts and the prices ranged from $5 - $10. This is a picture of a shirt I got for $5. Honestly prices like this don't come along too often so take advantage of their current sale. Also gaia has some items on sale so they are a good place to check out right now. Another place I have bought organic clothing is a site called 6pm.com. I bought some organic yoga shirts that I am very pleased with for 50 % off the regular price. The brand was watergirl which is the same company as Patagonia. So the biggest way I shop organic currently is by keeping my eyes open for sales and I pretty much only buy something if it is on sale. Also, I would rather have fewer items and have them be better quality and know that they companies that made them are taking care of the environment.
As far as buying organic produce I have the Dekalb Farmers Market. It is a LARGE warehouse and half of it is just filled with produce of which 40 % is organic produce. They make smoothies for you there with only fresh fruit (not frozen!), they open coconuts and sell you the coconut water and take the meat out for you and sell it to you. They make their own green juices with organic greens, they have a wonderful salad bar with some organic options and guacamole that is amazing! I will often go there for lunch when I don't want to make something myself and load up a big salad with a big glob of guac and it only costs $5! It is great because all the premade food they sell is so fresh. I rarely go to whole foods because compared to Dekalb farmers market their stuff is about 25 - 50 % more. Although I won't talk badly about whole foods because I am so glad they are flourishing and the public is demanding healthier options. A good thing to do when buying organic produce is to buy it in season. So I have been eating lots of grapefruits, apples and oranges because they are in season right now and I can get them at great prices. Whenever I travel the one thing I always miss is this market! I haven't found any place as great to shop as there. There are some great local organic farmers markets here in Atlanta and my next step is going to them. Right now my grocery bill is averaging around $60 per week and I am getting lots of food! Hope this helps out some for those interested!
Hi April, congrats on going Raw!I went Raw about 8 weeks ago and I am pretty much liking it. I dont have clear skin yet, and it has not seem to help my arthritis (in fact I am worse) but it has really helped with the digestion. The new bedding is gorgeous!

ReplyDeleteThanks for the under the canopy recommendation. Just got a few things for a steal.
awesome tips, love farmers markets, go late in the day, sometimes you can score deals (but sometimes it's picked over...so it's a mixed bag I guess)
